I think that racist attitudes and prejudices are very prominent in Haywood County. Anyone can have prejudices, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they will ACT on them. That being said, the reason there isn't a great deal of "racial tension" in Haywood County is because it's predominantly white.
As of the 2000 census:
The population of Haywood County is 54,033
The number of whites: 52,330 or 96.8%
The number of blacks: 684 or 1.3%
The number of Hispanics: 763 or 1.4%
After that there are a handful of Asians, Native Americans, and "other" races or "biracial" people.
You're not going to have a great deal of race-based conflict when there isn't much diversity to start with. However, I'm fairly certain if we asked the African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics who live here if they've ever felt discriminated against most would say "Yes" without hesitation.
I need more elaboration than that, please. Care to explain?

If you're a Redford fan, Walmart just got in some $ 4.88 movies and they have Three Days of the Condor. A really good spy movie-one of Redford's first. I loved The Sting and the Natural. The Absence of Malice with Paul Newman and Sally Field was another good one. My personal favorite was The Greatest Story Ever Told.

Wayne: I know the skyline of what you speak. I shudder to think our commissioners would ever let ours go to this point. I know we walk a fine line between owner's rights and government regulations, but sometimes regulations do more for the greater good. This is a sticky subject but the skyline of which you speak of is right behind my doctors' office so I see it twice a week. I will take a picture next Tuesday and bring it back for a post.

I don't think I've ever seen Tombstone....
My favorite movie of ALL time is Labyrinth.
My least favorite movie of ALL time is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy....so stupid.
And on another note.....
Hey......what's eating Gilbert Grape?

Still learning my way around Waynesville live. New to the area. Been here 4 months. Finally getting settled in......AND THAWING OUT!!!! Move from FL; this was a shock) Unlike the "rails" drummer, my wife and I are going to stick it out.
I claim to play drums, which is to say I can make alot of noise. Pluck around on a bass some too. Enough to be dangerous. Looking to get out and jam a little bit, and possiby hook up with a band in the future.
Also, wondering about the local club scene. Where are the live music places around Waynsville? Heard of the Rusty Lizard and Watering Hole? Where might they be? Where else is recommended? Anyone intersted in getting together to jam? Give me a holler on any of this.
On a sad note....I warn you, I play electronic drums...Roland V-drums.....I know, I know.....not REAL drums........but what can I say......after going half deaf from 25 years of cue-stick drums, I decided to salvage what was left of my hearing. Sorry!!!
Look forward to hearing from any of you. Thanks.
