Clothing Recycle
« on: Jun 02, 2005, 11:25:10 PM »

I am becoming a foster mother, and I am looking for some childrens clothes to have on hand and any baby items, I wan to be prepared for any child no matter the age.  If you have any items you no longer need let me know what they are and how much you want for them!  All items must be in good quality and reasonably priced.  Any assistance would be appreaciated! cheesy

Hey Mo2 (as DEA calls you)

Congratulations on becoming a foster mom! I am very interested in doing that myself one day. One day is the key phrase here.  cheesy

What kind of qualifications were you required to meet?

I would love to set up some kind of county wide clothing swap! Especially close to school time.Wanna help?

We could set up a special section for you where moms could donate clothes of all sizes for your foster kids!

All we need is a building, some tables and some volunteers!

MO2...  Join a Freecycle group.
http://www.freecycle.org/  That's their homepage.

You can find a freecycle group near you, not one in Waynesville that I saw, but there are others.  Check it out.  People give things away to others who need them.
Good luck!

And I think it's a great thing you're doing, it's a hard thing, and takes a special kind of person to do it.

Being a foster mom was a way i could turn my bad experiences to good, me and my husband came from troubled pasts, we have a lot of love and love to be around kids.  I was raised around broyhill, and seen how many children never got the family experince, so I knew this is what god wanted me to do thanks for all the info!  and to Jo the best way to get started is to jump in both feet first!  Call a private org or grandfathers childrens home they can give you the info you are looking for!  I would really be interested in a clothing swap i have tons of clothes from my two kids!Let me know when!!!

Okay momof2,

You have really started something now!  grin
We have been on the phone all day.
Clothing Swap will take place August 13 at the old Armory!
It's gonna be big too! We have even asked Mountain Projects and several other agencies to get involved and they have agreed.
You are gonna have more clothes than you know what to do with.

We will give you and everyone else more details as they become available.

Right now the tenative plan is to invite all of Haywood County to bring in their slightly used clean clothing, we will count the pieces and give a coupon in return. You then take your coupon and pick out the items you want. All leftover clothes will either go to you(momof2) or a non-profit agency.

Volunteers will be allowed to pick their clothes one hour before we start the swap.

Do you want to volunteer?  grin

I think we should do all clothes and not just kids but that may be taking on too much for the first time.

I know this will certainly help me with the cost of school clothes this year!

Someone there in your town should start a freecycle chapter.  It's a great thing and you can get rid of even the stuff that you think is junk.  One man's junk is another man's treasure.

Oh...believe me, I know! LOL

I am a yardsale fanatic. I bought so much of other peoples' junk that my husband told me something had to give. It was either him or the junk. LOL
Well, it wasn't that bad but he was serious.

I started selling it all on Ebay. It went so well, I just keep buying more junk to sell! The storage building never did empty out.We finally opened up a consignment shop and got rid of it all. The bonus was that it was fun and we learned a lot in the process.

I still yardsale but I am a little more selective now. wink

I will check into the freecycle chapter. Sounds like a great idea and we really appreciate the tip, Tinan! Thank you.

I love mine, JoLynn...  I've gotten rid of lamps, exercise machines, clothes, all kinds of stuff that was too good to throw out, or the garbage men wouldn't take.  And the people who took the stuff were all so grateful, and happy to get it.
One church in the area got several computers donated, and a guy offered to get them all working for them.  It brings out the best in everyone.

When I was involved with a money making project and it was a sale like you are talking about,  I canvassed local businesses for a donation of an item.  We received so many things it was unbelievable. We got whole hams, brand new jogging outfits, paintings,  manicures, etc.  There is no end to the variety you can get. And don't leave out grocery stores. They give some great things sometimes.  In fact, leave no one out.  You can be really surprised at what they might give. A service business might offer a free service.

For some of the items that were more valuable, we sold raffle tickets for them. For some of the less expensive items, we just put a price on them.  Sam's Club gave us many cases of sodas. We had those cold and ready to sell to customers.  A deli gave us some of the indivual bags of chips, and we sold those along with the sodas.

When I told the businesses that the profit was going to charity, they were very receptive. But if you do in fact tell them that, it is reasonable that you must give them a receipt for tax purposes if they want one. So you will have to work that part out.  All of our profits were going to Special Olympics so we already had receipts in hand for them and nothing to work out for us. We told them their business name would be put on the item at the sale as the donor and we made sure that we did that. We also wrote them a letter of thanks.  You never know when you might want a favor again.

These are just some suggestions. Take and use the ones you want, and leave the rest.

If we could get plenty of volenteers we might be able to handle all sizes we could really help a lot of people with this!!!  Are we going to have one table for each size or sex or what?  We need to get togeather soon to start planning!  And tring to get people togeather on this, the mountaineer and wlos might even help out!!!  Lets see what we can do!!!  Plus if we could raise some money for hcm or salvation army or other agencies it would be really nice!  LETS GET TO WORK!

Wow! Such great ideas.

We should all meet to do more brainstorming in the very near future.
And Marshy, Waynesville would be the perfect place for a weekend getaway........oh say....
around the weekend of Aug. 13th.
grin
You want to see all your ideas at work, don't you?
 wink

As for the location, I suggested the old Armory but have since found out that there will be an $80.00 fee and we will have to be out by 4:00pm on that day due to another scheduled event.

I believe that we can handle the fee and they will supply tables but the time constrant and the limited space might be an issue.

Any ideas on another possible location? The ideal location would be big, provide tables and be FREE.

The local business donations requiring a receipt should not be a problem since we have involved non-proffit agencies and since the money raised will go to charity.

While the HCM and the Salvation Army are excellent charities, I am sure we could find another charity that is in a little more need. I might be wrong but I think we ought to look into it anyway.

Sponsors will be needed for printing and advertising.
Then volunteers and business donations.

Please feel free to start making calls and contacts and email or post your results. Actually, how about we just keep posting and make it a public log of how this all unfolds?

Haywood County's 1st Annnual Clothing Swap

This is really going to be fun and benificial too!

Someone needs to go to walmart or kmart to see if they will donate an item to raffle off!!!  We also need a place where we can start taking donations a day or two early.  That way we can be already set up.  Not scrambling around at the last minute>  Check with Waynesville rec.  Also maybe an earlier date before school starts back up.  Two day event could also be an option! Also maybe contact a school, like way. jr high maybe use the track or football field!  or gym!

As suggestions for a site.........

Is there a church there with a large enough community room?
Is there an American Legion, VFW, etc?
Does the city own a building that is not being used at the present?

Mom of 2.....
A suggestion for getting volunteers.

A few Saturday's a year, we have an Ecumentical work day for the community. Several churches of several denominations plan out what the community needs and how volunteers can help.  We sign up and donate our time to different projects.
Perhaps you could contact several churches with the idea that this could be a community project that many churches could get involved in. It might work and it doesn't hurt to try.

Also, make the pricing as simple as possible. When you are working large scale, pricing can become so time consuming.  One way of doing it is to just have one blanket price for each type item.  ie, all blouses one price.  I realize that some will be worth more than others, but in the long run it works out, Towards the end of the sale, you can reduce. But if you don't make the pricing simple, you will have to have a large area to work in advance and with many. many volunteers.  Just finding the place to gather all the stuff together while you work on pricing creates a whole new project and problem.

Another way to get rid of most things at the end of the sale is to pass out bags and make a bag full one price. What ever they can stuff into the bag.

By deciding in advance which price to charge for items, you won't need to worry about a pricing place and indivuals can just store items at their home until time for the sale.

I would like to say that churches would be willing to donate their space. Also i do not now if they would charge a fee but the 209 fairgrounds would be perfect. we could always pitch in and help if the fee is small there. I will look around in clyde area for empty buildings. Also there are still victims of the flood like myself that need clothing and stuff that the government did not help with. Putting stuff back in this community would be great.

Mo 3 had a good point!  Every 1st weekend of a month is the yard sale day at fairgrounds!!!  Maybe we can rent out the bottom booth or building!  Can someone find out how much it is?  There will already be a lot of people there!  And if we advertise, we can get a lot more!  We also may need to rent a storage building and start taking donations.  We need to find out
1:  What we are going to sell or give
2:   what sizes
3:  Date
4:   Where
5:   Who will volenteer
