Gas is GONE!
« on: Aug 31, 2005, 10:44:35 PM »

The gas is gone. Long lines at the pumps all day, police were directing traffic in Sylva and  some had to wait up to 4 hours. By this evening it was all gone. Paper or plastic bags over every pump handle for miles.

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina continues to delay the delivery of gas to pumps in Western North Carolina. Leaders are urging people not drive unless they have to until the supply gets back up and running. The county is also asking non-essential employees to take sick or comp time over the next few days to cut down on demand. School officials say buses and schools will run as scheduled.

Tell us what you have seen at the pumps in your area.

What next?

It seems the gas lines that supply the southeast with 90% of our gas supply is run by electricity and there is no power.

The gas that was sold for $4.00 a gallon this afternoon is the same gas that was sold for $2.59 a gallon on Monday.  The owner of the gas station didn't have to pay anymore for it because they haven't got anymore since Monday, yet they gouged the consumer because everyone else is.  This is price gouging at its worst and something should be done about it!!

Mass panic is the problem. I'll not give the news media any points at all on this one.

Everyone seemed to panic Wednesday. Yet every service station I passed this morning was opened for business. Seems low grade is empty in a couple of them, and one mid grade. I've been told in the Waynesville area there is a $30 limit on fuel, and from what I understand it's prepay all the way around the county. No lines and such all day that I noticed.

This is all just silly - I mean the way people react to a shortage scare]/i]. My primary vehicle is a Nissan Maxima, it has over half a tank of gas in it. It can last me for about another week if necessary. I'll start thinking about refueling when it gets down to less than a quarter tank, just like I normally do. While the prices may still be high, I'm not going to subject myself to this panic so many people seem to be in. I'm certainly not going to sit in line for the pump twenty minutes to an hour.

As to Barbara's question..
I work in Canton very close to the interstate. All four stations in view of Interstate-40 had fuel this evening when I left. Unless there is more panic tomorrow (which I've seen no evidence of today) then you should be fine. Yet if their limiting how much you can buy your way too, I'd suggest topping it off several times on the trip to Canton. You'll probably want to have a full tank when you get here anyway. BTW, of info the lowest price I saw in Canton was $3.09, highest was $3.29. So you may want to check prices on your way too. (:

The owner of Charlie's Corner has been reported as saying there is only enough gas to last the Labor Day weekend. There will not be another shipment until next Saturday.
He must believe what he is saying because I actually saw him filling up two huge 55 gallon drums with gas.

We are certainly not trying to spread panic, however, we do feel it is only fair to report to the community what we know.

Please tell us what you have heard.

Just remember all this when the crunch passes. Charlie's Corner was selling gas for $3.69, and we drove over to Canton, and bought gas for only $2.79.. supply trucks had not made it up on thursday yet, so that was just price gouging.

It's be a LONG time before I buy gas at Charlie's again.

Best places I found were the Bethel grocery (across from the school) and Sandy's up in Canton.

Bethel refused to raise prices, and said they would rather run out, then take advantage of their loyal regular customers.

THOSE are people I will continue to support!

Obviously gas prices have went up locally. Hell, nationally. There have been no long lines on any stations I've passed the last few days.

I think we all knew the price would go up because of Katrina. So be it. Long lines however, people fighting in the lot because they got knocked out of line and such, arguing about something such as the supposed 'gas shortage' and wanting to fuel then and there, no.

I do blame much of the media for causing this panic, and unfortunately a bit of western North Carolina mass hysteria. Two or three people get worried, call their family, friends. Those people call their family, friends. Exponentially it just gets worse and worse. Take just a few worried people from any given county and think how it spreads. Not to mention what they're seeing on the news which simply adds to the worry and panic. Worry and panic spreads, especially in our county. I believe very much that the increase in price nationally is because we, me and you as a consumer, are getting everything we can get. That's making the price higher, and based on what I've seen as a whole, we're just as responsible for it as a people as anyone in government, or any given owner of a service station.

It's been very obvious in the grocery business too. Wednesday my store was wiped out on certain things, while others hadn't been touched. Things like packaged dinners, ramen, vienna sausage, basically stuff ready to eat or with some water to cook were hit pretty hard. While thinks like cleaning supplies and paper towels had no movement at all.

Last night we as management figured it would be dead because of the Tuscola/Pisgah football game and since we'd done so much business the last coupla days everyone would be there and not grocery shopping - WRONG! It was like a normal friday night. At least shopping was more even this time.

It seems back to normal now for the most part. I don't like the gas prices at all, but I'll grin and bear it. I have a little less than a half of a tank now and still plan on doing what I said - Fill (as much as they will allow me) when I'm to an eighth.

If that makes me conservative, then fine. I'm just not going to submit myself to chaos. I feel that is what all this is. Naturally, I don't plan on eating my cats either, even if need be.

But if prepared properly...  evil

On Weds though we did see stations closing before rush hour, and I'd say 75% of the stations we stopped at ine thursday were out of regualr and medium grades.

The price gouging is just not right though, and I know I'll not frequent people trying to take advantage of the situation, whatever it may be.

BTW, any Labor day doings going on around here?

Well, not so much for me. I'll be working for most of the weekend. I expect to be off Monday night.

The wife is off tomorrow, but is working on Monday. Many guests are cancelling reservations at Grove park Inn, so I suspect tourism will be down over the weekend as well.

I'm happy to report yesterday was more normal on sales with a holiday coming. Looks like I over ordered some things assuming people would continue panicking. We did a little more business yesterday than we did last year which is normal - Each year you pick up, but it's certainly evened back out to places the sales are expected.

I also noticed the price of fuel in that part of Canton held all day yesterday. Made me feel better about the whole thing too.

I did find out the hendersonville Apple Festival is this weekend, so we'll probably make a trip down there, since it's kind of a second home to us...

Either way, seems like we're paying much more gas than we should be.

Still it's not as bad to be an American as it is to be Dutch..

Have a look at those prices!

Yeah, it's funny how they say the crunch is past, but the prices are still 30-40 cents a gallon more.
