Yeah. That IS an awful lot of money for a cat that's already "fixed".

That's really really pricey. When I adopted Knoxend and Kia, it was around $20 each, and I had to pay first for the inoculations, and the neuter. Which was about $10 for each IIRC. But that was two cats, not one. Still much less than you were quoted.
It is rather confusing, but I will tell you that the Animal Shelter is really low on the list on money recourses for the county. It's not that they don't have good people, but I think they're so limited, they can no longer assume responsibility for some of the things an adoptive owner needs to do.
It's probably cheaper for euthanasia than hold and feed and wait for potential parents. I'm sure they don't like it, it's just the way it is.
It makes me wonder how many veterinarian's offices employees including doctors, receptionists, assistants, nurses have adopted animals themselves because someone didn't pay a bill. I'll bet real hard that the Animal Shelter personnel have done it that much more, and maybe to the point each of them can't take anymore either.

One other thing that needs mentioning.
I think it's prudent Haywood County gets really serious about the procreation problem of animals. This is something the county could do if it was so inclined. While I'm one to really hate government involvement in such things, I've had a really bad problem in my neighborhood for about two years with stray cats. I know three people in other neighborhoods through out the county that have had a problem.
The problem is, no one gets them fixed. And while really socialist as it sounds, it may be a good idea for the county to have every cat and dog registered in a way that the government know they are fixed. Some kind of database somewhere to actually know.
I can't believe I'm actually considering this course of action, but about every month I hear from a friend in one or another community complaining about the stray cat problem. You really can't get help from the shelter aside from traps, and some of these areas are rural where strays become wild. My suggestion to my uncle who lives on Anderson Mountain was just to shoot them. That's all he can do since they're too wild in a wooded area to ever be domesticated.
The problem isn't the procreation of kitties, it's the fact no one neuter's one, two, three, and it makes kittens that are wild. And in most situations becomes wild. Not something cute and cuddly to get for a child, but a wild one that no one will consider. Not assuming responsibility for an animal should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Otherwise, the animal shelter is gonna be forced to destroy many more animals.

I know what you mean about the cats. I have a neighbor whose cat has had kittens 3 times, the animal is 2 years old. Thing is, the family was told, by the dog warden, that if they bring the cat and her kittens by the animal shelter they will be given a certificate to get the mother spayed for free and they'd give them certificates to get the kittens done for 10 bucks apiece.

I don't think that a database would be practical. How in the world would they ever keep up with them all. They procreate as fast or faster than rabbits! LOL
We also have a problem in our neighborhood. It does not help that the neighborhood is close to the highway (easy access for dropping off unwanted cats).
Yea...I think local government is going to have to step up to the plate a little better here. Hire some more "cat catchers" at minimum. I do not want to see a bunch of cats uthanized but we have to be concerned about the public's saftey, as well.

I think you're right. This is not the old timey mounatin land anymore where you can let your dogs and cats roam free. This is an incorporated city and county with a substantial population. The stray cat and dog issue could lead to some serious health risks in the very near future.

He, I went back and looked at what I wrote. Boy I do get so aggravated at times and tend to make rather unreasonable or impossible suggestions. A lot of the reason I get aggravated though is because I have no real solution. And it pisses me off there is no real one that comes to mind, without getting more socialist than I dare to tread.
