Mountain Credit Union Robbed
« on: Nov 22, 2005, 09:42:23 AM »

We had this story on our home page last Wednesday ...

One of our friends was in the waiting room anxious for an approval on his possible auto loan when the bank was robbed. Needless to say he did not find out that day if he was approved or not.

He has been down to the police station several times for written statements, composite drawings, etc. and was even called Saturday night for a lineup. Not to be in it but to pick someone out. LOL

When the credit union reopened the following day he did return to inquire about his loan application. They told him that he really did not qualify, however, because of the ordeal that he had endured with them they would make an acception. He was approved and is now driving a brand new truck!

Our friend told us everyday the week prior to the robbery that he was doing some serious praying for a new truck. Guess this goes to show you that God can make anything happen.

Here is the article from The Mountaineer:

Police search
by DARREN MILLER

Second Haywood credit union robbed since September

A Hispanic male armed with a small chrome handgun entered Mountain Federal Credit Union at 33 Maple St. in Waynesville at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and left about two minutes later with an estimated $10,000 in stolen cash, said Lt. Tim Brooks of the Waynesville Police Department, which is investigating the robbery and searching for the suspect.

After ordering the tellers to hand him money, the man left the credit union and walked to nearby Hazel Street, where he entered a black Chevrolet Caprice or Beretta, based on the accounts of witnesses, Brooks said. The car was driven by another person, he added, and no tag number was obtained.

The whole ordeal — from the time the assailant entered the credit union until he left the scene in the black car — took little more than five minutes, Brooks said. The two tellers involved immediately called authorities when the man exited the building, he said, adding that both were pretty shook up about what had taken place.

The credit union’s video surveillance system was not working, Brooks said. Therefore, investigators are depending on the descriptions of eyewitnesses to help create a sketch of the suspect.

Bank employees told police that the suspect appeared to be left-handed. He has dark hair and light facial hair including a moustache, they said, describing a scar near his right eye. The employees said the suspect spoke good English with a slight accent.

The suspect did throw off a baseball hat, which landed in a creek, and shed a khaki jacket with a red inside lining as he fled, Brooks said. Those items are of little or no use in identifying the suspect, he added, because in order to use DNA samples “we have to have something to match it to.”

Police are interviewing a few witnesses, but Brooks said they are asking for assistance from the public — anyone who might have seen the suspect or the vehicle, especially which direction it headed.

Anyone with pertinent information is asked to call Det. Crystal Shuler at 456-5363.

Two months ago, Champion Credit Union in Clyde, as it opened for business that day in September, was robbed by two Hispanic men while another man waited in a vehicle outside. Those suspects, who were armed with handguns, still have not been caught. “We’re investigating any possible connections,” Brooks said.

We're gonna have to get more witness accounts of the getaway car. Is it a Caprice or a Beretta - They are two completely different looking vehicles, not only in size but the way the headlights and taillights are.

Well, they were caught. Both of them and had the actual picture('s) in the paper. Seems they went to rip off a local grocery store as well after their tirade on Mountain Federal and got caught there. Both are in custody pending a bond or trial.

Yet I can't seem to find any information about the article at all. I'm pretty sure it was in the Mountaineer but if not it was in the Asheville Citizen. Neither website is really user friendly looking for past day articles. Then again, I'm really impatient and tired. (:

Hi DEA   These media outlets like ACT and WLOS are a joke. They have no grapes to give you the real news like Matt Mittan the Take a Stand   show on 570 AM . The problem is with ACT and the WLOS people have no compiition in there respectable markets. WLOS would last about one week in the Boston Mass market. They need a good house cleaning, ACT could use a litte too. I like the Mountaineer so far only been in Clyde for 2 years now so far so good Just my half a cents worth.    Mike

Robbers caught while stealing steaks
by DARREN MILLER

Waynesville police officers arrested two men early Saturday morning after they attempted to steal steaks from Ingles grocery store and charged them for the armed robbery of Mountain Federal Credit Union that occurred a week ago.

Samuel Parris, 48, and Michael Wayne Todd, 43, both Waynesville residents, remain in custody at the Haywood County Jail — each under a $50,000 secured bond.

The suspects possessed money “confirmed as coming from that bank” when apprehended at Ingles on Russ Avenue, said Det. Crystal Shuler, adding that the serial numbers on the cash matched those on the bills stolen from the credit union.

Police officials also impounded the suspects’ vehicle — a black Chevrolet Beretta with a red pinstrip, which is an exact match of the vehicle witnesses say they saw pick up the robbery suspect on Hazel Street in Waynesville last Wednesday afternoon.

The next day, police released a sketch of the suspect who actually went into the credit union and demanded two tellers to give him money. About $10,000 in cash was stolen from the bank, police said.

“Mr. Todd also closely resembles the sketch,” Shuler said, “although he’s altered his appearance somewhat.”

Although Parris never entered the bank, he helped in the effort by driving the getaway vehicle and “acting in concert” with Todd, Shuler said. Therefore, police were able to charge both men with felony armed robbery. While the suspect entered the credit union last week displaying a small chrome handgun, no gun was found on either Todd or Parris when they were apprehended early Saturday night. Asked whether the suspects would have been found if they not attempted to shoplift at Ingles, Shuler said the likelihood of the two men avoiding authorities for a long period of time was low.

“They probably would have turned up later because they are both local,” Shuler said, adding that both have criminal records that include assaults, breaking and entering and larceny, but no prior charges for armed robbery.

The two tellers involved in the robbery have already looked at photographs of the two men who were arrested, Shuler said.

Shuler declined to comment on whether the tellers positively identified either man as the suspect in last week’s armed robbery of Mountain Federjal Credit Union on Maple Street in Waynesville, which was the second armed robbery of a Haywood County credit union in as many months.

In September, two men, armed with handguns, entered Champion Credit Union in Clyde at the beginning of the work day. They fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a small sports utility vehicle driven by a third man. They have not been identified or captured.

“We’ve looked at that,” Shuler said regarding whether or not the suspects arrested for last week’s robbery were involved in the September theft. “We don’t think there’s going to be any connection.”

The reporter and the details were good, but the information is a bit dismal.

The District Attorney's office does has a lot to explain. Most of the report on WLOS was pretty much to the point, and well researched.

Many of these cases should have been prosecuted in my opinion. Why they weren't is anyone's guess.

I suppose I'll allow the possibility that some of the court schedule is mired up with the fact we lost much of the Canton municipal building last year in the flood. That would help explain some things, and maybe why some rather difficult to prosecute charges are dropped to lesser charges. The old building in Waynesville wasn't capable of such an influx loosing another site for court proceedings.

Yet, we've had a year and the municipal building in Canton still is not opened for business. The Canton Police Department is still in the plaza. With the new justice building opened in Waynesville, I expect with new (and more) courtrooms, some of this will change.

Still though, some of these cases WLOS mentioned should have been done better. One mentioned was a DUI case. I'm sorry, but a DUI is a DUI. Driving under the influence isn't something that should ever be tolerated, and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent, and I don't care who the district attorney is... Also in the broadcast was the fact one person (victim of a young man that hit him) wasn't notified about the court date or anything else. I don't think that was a bad thing unless the victim is considering legal compensation (the victim was out of work for several weeks and had significant medical bills). But, that's up to the victim to keep up with, not the court system.

Many things are bothering me about this report. Hopefully though with the opening of the new justice building, things will change faster than later. Hopefully by the court moving faster and in a less piled up environment.
