A couple of weekends ago I went fishing up the Middle Prong of the West Fork of the Pigeon. That's the creek that comes into the West Fork just above Sunburst campground on NC 215. Right now you can take the FS road 97 pretty far up on Big Beartrail Ridge, then hike up the Haywood Gap Trail toward the Blue Ridge Parkway in about 3/4 mile to a small waterfall. Above the falls is some great native trout fishing, as far up as you can find water.
Sometimes, however, there is a gate across the road less than 1/2 mile from the campground, making this a 1-1/2 or 2 mile hike up to the falls.

That hike is indeed a nice one. We usually do it from the top down with a shuttle. Park one car at Haywood Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the other up the road from the Sunburst Campground.
The lower portion of the hike is a long walk along the forest road, then veers off onto an old logging road to reach the river. It's pretty casual and gentle, a nice trail for a run or bike ride. The big pool below the falls is a chilly swimming hole.
Haywood Gap Trail is far more rugged, particualary above the start of the water. It's usually overgrown a bit with briars in places, but it also has some really enchanting spots once the water starts. I'm sure I have a photo or two somewhere. Here's one near the parking area that might catch your eye;
I made the mistake of parking at Haywood Gap and hiking down about 1/2 mile to the first fishable water, and fishing down the creek. By the time I got to the falls, I decided to try my luck and head on down to Sunburst and hitch a ride back up to my truck.
